Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Seven Year Itch’ Dress Sells for $4.6 Million

The iconic white garment had been expected to go for $2 million at a Beverly Hills auction.

Marilyn Monroe’s iconic white dress from The Seven Year Itch sold for a whopping $4.6 million at a Beverly Hills auction Saturday night, according to CNN.

The pleated halter dress — the one seen in the movie billowing upward above a subway grate — was expected to go for $2 million. In addition to the $4.6 million winning bid, the buyer will pay another $1 million in commission.
The bids were “totally crazy, especially in this recession,” collector Keya Morgan told CNN.

Other Monroe outfits also sold at the action: A red-sequin gown and feathered had worn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes went for $1.47 million, while costumes from There’s No Business Like Show Business and River of No Return brought in another $1.2 million.
Nearly 700 items — all from Debbie Reynolds’ collection — were sold at the Saturday night auction, overseen by Profiles in History. Other items included:

— A blue cotton dress and a pair of ruby slippers made for Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz brought a combined $1.75 million.
— One of Charlie Chaplin’s signature bowler hats, which he wore in several films, sold for $135,300.

— The velvet brown racing silks and riding pants worn by a young Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet sold for $73,800.

— A World War I military uniform worn by Gary Cooper in Sergeant York was sold for $67,650.
